Mourdock to Receive Endorsements from Over 75% of Republican County Chairs

The Howey Political Report has it that Richard Mourdock’s Senate campaign says they will have endorsements from at least 75% of Republican County Chairs at their announcement on February 22nd.  That would mean at least 61 Republican County Chairmen plan to endorse Mourdock.

We would be a little surprised if Mourdock was able to get that many signed on.  Typically, you just do not see a willingness within that group of people to publicly endorse a challenger to an incumbent.  Private support is a completely different matter and we could see Mourdock having a good amount of support.  He has building those relationships for years and has probably attended more Lincoln Day Dinners than anyone can count.

As Howey noted,

“Chair endorsements do not always provide a reliable indicator of a race.  In 1996, Republican gubernatorial candidate Rex early had about two-thirds of the party chairs backing his campaign, but he lost the primary to Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith. “

We tend to agree. While this would show a large amount of support among the rank and file Republicans, we simply cannot fathom Mourdock will have the financial support to run the kind of campaign it would take to unseat the incumbent Senator.

And how did Goldsmith do in the General Election in 1996? He lost because he DID NOT have the rank and file supporters…

    • Eric, do you think Lugar would lose the General Election? Isn’t his approval rating like 70% among likely voters in the general election?

  3. Oh I beg to differ! These are changing times. Try fathoming this: Mourdock has name recognition throughout the state of Indiana. His conservative values place him high above Lugar with the people on the ground. Did you fathom last November that the results would have been what they were?
Believe me, Richard Mourdock is the Tea Party favorite. If you think we made a difference last year, well you ain’t seen nothing yet. We’ve only just begun.
    This IS going to happen!

    • We actually did fathom that the results would be what they were. If you read the blog, you’d find we typically lean to the Right. It is great how those on the Left torch us for being shills and the TEA Party does the same thing. Maybe, just maybe, we are somewhere in the middle?

We don’t see how the TEA Party overcomes the money issue in this race. Is money all that matters? No. But it is tough to win without it when your opponent has it.

I believe Lugar is going to be really surprised how many chairs AND voters will be supporting Mourdock in the May 2012 Republican Primary!

I think EVERYBODY will be greatly surprised, when Richard Mourdock finally announces, to see how much support he actually has. Most will be because Richard is the BEST candidate for the job, but some of it will be because Lugar is the WORST candidate for the job at this time. Money is not the only factor in a political race…..unless you are in Chicago. Well, Indiana is not in Chicago yet. As has been said over and over, Lugar had demonstrated that he no longer represents conservative, constitutional voters in Indiana. Senator Lugar has, in the past, well represented the people of Indiana. No more. I don’t understand, when it is so obvious that so many wish he would retire, why at his age, and now with his documented recent votes, he would want to go through what will be a brutal battle, only costing the victorious candidate a much depleted war chest. Is his ego so large that he can’t stand the obvious that only his hardcore friends still want him in Congress. It must be.

Jack, bring it . Mourdock has an over inflated view of himself. the magic word in the head line is ” to”. When it comes down to brass tacks, its all about the money. Go ahead an attack Lugar all you want. You all seem to have very short memories. It was just a few short months ago that you all were holding him in the highest esteme, now you are trashing one ofthe greatest Hoosiers ever.

Nice, you shoud be ashamed of yourself. Your and Dave Brooks are cut out of the same cloth. What can you do for me TODAY is your only concern.
